According to Sgt Dallas Hollis (he was my squad leader in 81 -- he moved on to SF training, hoping for assignment with Delta One), the balls are why the SF are issued the extra large ruck sack.
Seriously:
The tunnel rat is simply doing a job that has to be done. He is a volunteer, and one you hope will volunteer a second time, that way you don't have another trying to "learn the ropes" (a hands-on operation). The first time in the hole is generally the last for many soldiers -- and for many reasons, not the least is that he might not return.
