There was a news item in Stars & Stripes just prior to the launch of Desert Storm regarding a British major(?) who had lost his "War Notes". Seems he had stopped on his way home from a 10 Downing Street meeting to check out a car show. When he got back to his car, his laptop was gone, along with about 3 years of data.
I think he quit working for the government shortly after.
