I excuse the children

When I saw the video, most of the kids I saw looked like they were under 12 years old. They were smiling but that's to be expected. After all, the video showed adults handing out candy. Most kids will smile when someone gives them candy. Odds are they really didn't know or understand what they were "celebrating." The adults are a different matter.

I saw that video about a month ago so my memory of it is sketchy. What I recall is that there weren't very many people being shown, perhaps a few dozen. This is out of a population of millions of Palestineans. I hardly call that a representative example. Still, it presented the Palestineans and their cause in a very unfavorable light here in America. A lot of Americans were becoming to the Palestineans and their struggle against Israel.

That video, coming as it did when our passions were so inflamed by the attacks, did a lot to turn US opinion against the Palestineans. Odds are that a year from now, if you asked most Americans what they remember from Sept 11th, many will recall seeing video of Palestineans celebrating the attacks in the street. It's probably an unfair perception but few things are harder to change than someone's perception of an event.
