I heard a similar report on "Morning Edition" not half an hour ago.

Suddenly, the Taliban is feeling not quite so invincible, so it's looking to broaden the conflict.

Another factor is that US forces are not coordinating closely with Northern Alliance troops, presumably so that, if the Taliban is toppled, the Northern Alliance has a hope of stepping in to restabilize government functions and forming a coalition among the various ethnic groups without appearing to be installed by American military people.
