Astute analysis, Raoul

...and one with which I agree.

I don't believe there's much of a chance for immigrants to Israel changing their minds and returning to their former homes. In the recent past, especially since the "glasnost" and "perestroika" end-of-days for the USSR, the majority of immigrants have been from fromer Soviet republics - in some cases, their parents or grandparents had been forcibly relocated by Stalin, out of European Russia to 'the Stans' (Uzbek-, Tadzhik-, etc.). That made them a minority within a minority: Russian-speakers of European 'stock' whose internal passport gave their nationality as 'Jew' - by definition of Soviet law, they could not claim to be formerly Ukranian, or Byelorussian. In short, they were technically stateless, second-class citizens - in shorter, there's nothing for them to go 'home' to.

The other best-known case of [relatively] recent immgration to Israel is the Falashas, the black Africans who had been Jews since at least Solomon's time. There's an impression that they perhaps would rather have stayed in Ethiopia... imagine the public relations if they decided en masse to return there?

Of course, if Israel were concerned about world opinion, they might already behave differently than they do...
