You are right that it's a bogus issue

I think it's kind of a chicken and egg issue.

Your Sahara desert analogy was of little use since any meaningful description of an economy requires at least 2 participants.

A better attempt at what you were trying to illustrate might be as follows:

You drop a man into the middle of a primitive tribe in the Amazon basin. He has possessions that are of value ($) to the tribespeople. He wants to buy a planeride outta there. You have the consumer, but no producer of the required service. No economy.

I would point out that some enterprising tribesperson (investor) would probably eye those valuable possessions and say: "maybe we can work something out". He offers to provide a canoe ride to the nearest town for less than the visitor's entire fortune (leaving him with hope that he has enough left that he can still barter his way back to civilization).

In other words: the fact that there is a consumer willing to pay enough to make it worth an entrepeneur's while, implies that the producer will materialize (providing he is not by himself in the Sahara).

Here's another silly thought experiment:

1. From our world, subtract all business and leave all consumers unmolested. Result: consumers make new businesses. Economy flourishes over time.

2. From our world, subtract all consumers and leave all businesses alone (whatever that means - I told you it was silly). Result: no one to buy anything. No economy.

In any case it is obvious that business can be created from where no business existed before. Even if you are a creationist, you must admit that there was a period in human history when society was not yet organized into businesses and consumers. It is not clear to me that the reverse is true: businesses can create consumers where none existed before (pet rocks notwithstanding).

I'm not sure what your subsequent discussion of producers, consumers and parasites had to do with anything, but I agree with most of what you said. Although your description of "ideal utopia of the leftist" is approximately as apt as saying the "ideal utopia of the rightest" is a cross between Nazi (LarryJ - Dude: I'm saying this is not apt. Please keep it sheathed.) Germany and Gravy Planet.

And when you say nasty things about Democrats, it is hard to assume you are talking about other Democrats.
