Re: You are right that it's a bogus issue

Good grief. I spent paragraphs explaining that the division into "consumers" and "producers" is artificial and meaningless, and the point sails right over your head.

However, let's continue with the division as though it were real, and look at your experiment:

Here's another silly thought experiment:

1. From our world, subtract all business and leave all consumers unmolested. Result: consumers make new businesses. Economy flourishes over time.

Unless you have the amazing ability to crap an automobile factory, this may be a little difficult. You can go to any Third World country and watch the progress of people who do not have access to the capital that makes people in industrial countries so productive.

2. From our world, subtract all consumers and leave all businesses alone (whatever that means - I told you it was silly). Result: no one to buy anything. No economy.

A vast portion of our economy is businesses selling things to each other. But then, does that make them "consumers?" More of that false division again.

In any case it is obvious that business can be created from where no business existed before. Even if you are a creationist, you must admit that there was a period in human history when society was not yet organized into businesses and consumers. It is not clear to me that the reverse is true: businesses can create consumers where none existed before (pet rocks notwithstanding).

Wrong. If we scrap this stupid Marxist "business/consumer" dichotomy, we can see that trade between producers has been going on since Ug the Hunter first realized that it was easier to trade meat to One-Legged Grog (who can't hunt, but is a whiz at chipping excellent flint arrowheads) instead of having to sit around making his own lousy arrowheads. This, and everything that has come along since, is how an economy works. Is Grog the producer or the consumer? Is Ug?

As for businesses creating "consumers," look around you and see all the things you "need" that didn't even exist fifteen years ago. I assume you're not typing on a Selectric.

I'm not sure what your subsequent discussion of producers, consumers and parasites had to do with anything,[Geeeez!]
but I agree with most of what you said. Although your description of "ideal utopia of the leftist" is approximately as apt as saying the "ideal utopia of the rightest" is a cross between Nazi (LarryJ - Dude: I'm saying this is not apt. Please keep it sheathed.) Germany and Gravy Planet.

And when you say nasty things about Democrats, it is hard to assume you are talking about other Democrats.

You might want to consider a deeper study of economics--maybe you won't be a Democrat forever. ;)
