and a clash of civilizations could be avoided. The real challenge, I believe, is getting Islamic societies to buy into the notion that modernization via free markets, globalization, and healthy political reforms DOESN'T mean losing their Muslim souls to the West. Otherwise they're continue to be mired in poverty, ignorance, and growing conflict with the entire non-Muslim world.
