The middle class can't take a tax hike now... most don't even have the jobs now to pay taxes! Last thing the government needs is a large mass of jobless people to 'take care of' (government programs). Putting a larger tax on middle class owned business will indeed hurt them and those they employ.

I'm with Tom in that 'the people' know what's best for them. I didn't see 'fear' in the eyes of folks out shopping during the holidays either... worried, yes, but they still went out there and spent. Why K-Mart is going out of business is beyond me, lol, Martha Stewart should go ahead and buy the company... most of the merchandise sold at K-M has her label on it anyways. lol I'm also glad that they stayed opened later than everyone else during the holidays. We even saw WalMart employees shopping there after WM closet. lol

I think the economy will come out ok during this war providing, as Tom said, the government keeps a more 'guardian' approach and keeps the dirty politiking hands off (no tax hikes for the middle class!).
