Again missing in all the great articles I've read about this is where the hell the hydrogen is supposed to come from. The fact that electrical cars require electricity is also overlooked in "Forward Looking" programs similar to this. I'm not that impressed by the technologies that are supposed to crack hydrogen from natural gas. You still are burning fossil fuels, the scientists seem a bit cagey about the efficiency compared to simply burning the gas, and you end up with a lot of carbon you don't know what to do with.
Basically, the leftists want the individually-owned automobile dead, dead, dead. It rubs them the wrong way the same way that any sign of rampant individuality does. The mileage requirements, like the campaigns against highway construction* or restrictive regulations on car owners, are designed to make car ownership and operation as difficult as possible.
*California's new transportation budget is currently being pumped almost entirely into mass transit, with only grudging amounts being spent to keep highways from totally falling apart. I have yet to see a mass transit system that makes more money than it costs, yet these heavily-subsidized boondoggles continue to suck up my gas tax money that is theoretically supposed to keep up our highways.
