Yup. Gasoline comes from oil, and oil is sucked out of the ground. Oil reserves will not be available forever, and when it runs out we'll probably switch over to either coal or nuclear to power the electrical grids. Shale oil and tar sands are bad because strip-mining is the way its recovered - you can't just drill a hole in the ground. Like some giant hand they literally take millions of cubic yards of soil and dirt and WASH the oil out of it !!! Then they put the soil and dirt back where they got it. But that is one option on the drawing board. Why? Because Canada only has about 2 years of easily recoverable oil left - the kind you just suck out of the ground. After that its shale oil or nothing.
It's the knee-jerk reaction to the clean alternatives, for example Canada would have to double its hydroelectric infractructure (which we could, barely), or install upwards of 750,000 offshore wind turbines, each rated at 600 kW peak output. Most politicians would quickly and quietly sign off on funding for more nuclear plants, just like California did during the energy crisis. What we really need is an energy limited economy. Why do we let it grow anyways? Like population, why do we keep letting in more immigrants? Why do we want our population to grow?
I think wind power would be great, but we'd have to install energy storage systems for when the wind doesn't blow, such as thermal sinks, pressure sinks, etc. that can be tapped. The great thing about wind power is that it's proven technology, been around for centuries, and it will boost the job market - a lot of simple jobs that don't require higher education. It's a great way for ordinary people to make ends meet. Wind power is also zero-emissions. But this is all just to make the electrical grid totally renewable. What about cars, trucks, trains, ships, and aircraft?
Oil supplies are running out. We have built our entire civilization on the performance expections of cars and trucks. We know that this transport truck can carry x-tonnes of food a certain distance in a certain time interval. When the oil runs out and we have to switch to a low-energy alternative, we won't just have to cut back on weekend drives in the country, we might be dying of starvation.
