My view is you damn well can judge a course by its reading list, at least by my experience. I'll leave it at that, but submit further information for the interested reader:
The course is taught online, but I am not interested enough in making a point to audit it
The course description:
The Sexuality of Terrorism: Readings, talks, films, and a discussion forum. Online discussions to have faculty participation. Not for credit - Open to the entire University community. Professors: Patricia Guthrie and Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
A bit on Professor Guthrie:
Anthropologist Patricia Guthrie is the Director of Women's Studies at California State University Hayward. Professor Guthrie received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Rochester in 1978. Her ethnographic research and publications explore the lives of African-Americans and include her book Catching Sense: African American Communities on a South Carolina Sea Island, 1996, chapters in edited volumes, such as Are You Hip to the Jive? The African Diaspora and the Modern World, in Encyclopedia of American Immigrants Cultures and numerous
article in Transforming Anthropology, The Journal of Black Studies, Ache: A Journal for Lesbian of African Descent and various other Journals.
Professor Guthrie is the recipient of many awards, fellowships and grants, including NSF, the Smithsonian, and the United States Census Bureau. She is also involved in many community projects, and is a Board Member of the following: Mary Ann Wright Foundation [Aids the Hungry and Homeless], Emergency Shelter Program, Southern Alameda Country Domestic Violence Law Project. Professor Guthrie is an active member of the Society of Research on African Cultures, Women's Council of the California State University and California Black Faculty and Staff Association.
All this is probably neither here nor there. Strikes me as a more-or-less average leftist academic. A dime-a-dozen at your typical campus.
