Of course from Australia that's how many US "interventions" seem, aside from coldly cynical Presidents protecting their oil-fields...
HOWEVER the alternatives are worse. Give me American Hegemony over any bunch of lunatic ideologues that have plagued "poor countries" [there is a good reason why most are poor] and have laid waste to lives of the innocent whily-nily.
Lefty academics are happy to sprout half-true crap, but leave unacknowledged the quite horrible fates in store for all who blindly follow most ideologies. The US stands out because its revolution(s) have mostly succeeded.
