Oz and Nuclear Energy

Adam,

I've always thought that Australia was well placed to become the center of a world wide nuclear industry. Australia is rich in uranium and has vast stretches of precambriam desert rock that would be ideal for long term waste disposal. My "crazy idea" is that Australia would manufacture complete graphite ball gas cooled nuclear power plants on barges in Newcastle, Townsville or some other industrial port city. The complete power plant with an unfueled reactore would be shipped to a customer's city and located nearby in an artificial atol. The power plant would run as a turn key system with Australia providing the technology, operating staff, fuel and nuclear waste disposal. When the power plant reached the end of its designed life expectancy, it would have it's depleted fuel removed and its structure barged to Normanton, Queensland (almost no one lives there) where it would be dismantled. The short lived nuclear waste would be stored near Normanton while the long lived stuff would be stored deep in precambrian rock. Based on this scenario, Australia could replace Saudi Arabia as the world's main energy supplier.

Of course this is utter fantasy because the Greens would make it their life mission to block it.
