The France Syndrome

To put it bluntly, most environmentalists are against anything that could provide the human race with large quantities of cheap energy. This was revealed back when the whole concept of cold fusion was a big fad. For a while, no one was sure if this was real or not. Had environmentalists been really concerned about pollution and nuclear waste, the idea should have gotten an enthusiastic reception: clean, cheap, and nearly limitless power from a common resource. Yet most of them were aghast at the idea of the human race having access to this much energy.

By the way, although I am pro-nuke, it seems to me that if any nation was set up for large application of solar power, it would be Australia, which seems to be equipped with large, empty sunny areas in abundance.
