The Left has been trying to "deconstruct" the Second Amendment for decades. The confusion of language and meaning is a major weapon in their arsenal ("Depends on what the meaning of 'is' is...") and no doubt they have succeeded in cooking and reparsing the phrase "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" to mean something other than the obvious statement. Unless you have some secret knowledge of the term "the people" to make it mean something other than "the people." Not certain people. Not just people in the National Guard. The people. All of them. There are numerous studies showing that this is exactly what the Founding Fathers had in mind. A quick reference. I can come up with a lot more.

The totalitarian fears the armed citizen worse than anything else. It is no coincidence that edicts disarmaming average citizens and restricting arms to an elite have been among the first things accomplished by almost every dictatorship in history. It is no coincidence that the Democrats and the Left have also made this a major goal.

Again, as with many of their favorite policies and programs, their stated purpose ("increasing public safety") has nothing to do with their real purpose ("disarming prospective slaves"). The proof of this is that every study in America shows a well-armed citizenry reduces crime more than just about anything else. If one honestly wanted to increase public safety, the objective would be to ensure that as many honest, knowledgable citizens were armed as possible.
