Between the wars, we participated in many useless disarmament conferences and treaties that accomplished nothing. We even went so far as to outlaw war with the naive Kellogg-Briand Pact. WWII broke out 11 years later.
Starting before we entered WWII, we spend billions on Lend-Lease to support Britain, the Free French, the Soviet Union and others. During the war, we spent a couple hundred thousand American lives and many billions of dollars to end Europe's latest bout with mass stupidity.
After the war, not only did we rebuild Western Europe with the Marshall Plan, we set up NATO with the US providing the lion's share of the personnel and expense. Fully 1/3rd of the US defense budget during the Cold War went to protect Europe at a cost of trillions of dollars and quite a few lives. As today's helicopter crash in the Philippines shows so well, military service is dangerous even outside of combat.
There were other little things like the Berlin Airlift that come to mind where America came through for Europe. Frankly, I'm rather tired of their arrogant attidude. Just once, I'd like for them to be at least a little grateful for all that we've done for them. As it is, Europe can kiss my rear end.
