<Islam ain't my religion. It's a relatively new religion, born into an area of the world known for violence and difficulties. It reflects it's origins, just as does Christianity.
That's very true, Bowser. The religions that we find most violent are dominating areas known for violent temperament. So, it's not the religion that matters (which isn't that different from Christianism ) but the way for people to be able to control themselves. The veil and the way women are treated pre-existed Islam.
And it's not just religion.
When I went to Israel in 1979, I heard comments by Israeli girls about the Israeli boys and how they'd be chased, cornered. I also heard and saw how rude the boys could be (far more than in northern European countries).
The mediterranean temperament is a difficult obstacle to harmoneous democracy. But I'm sure it can work, it's in their own interest.
