as shown in the middle of this article about activities at the University of Texas - Austin:
It's easy to laugh at the expense of this misguided youngster, but who's filling his head with such nonsense? I met one tenured professor in the communications department who could be the source for some of it. His name is Robert Jensen.
Mr. Jensen's approach to terrorism is to change the subject. "If there was any justice," he tells me, the United States would pay "reparations" to countries in Latin America and Asia. We owe it to them for putting down their "independence" movements. He cites Vietnam's "popular" communist revolution, which, he says, turned violent and oppressive only because of American opposition.
He also believes the first President Bush and Bill Clinton are war criminals for destroying civilian infrastructure in Iraq. This isn't reported, because there are no "true leftists" on the staff of any major or midlevel American newspaper. The New York Times is "moderate." The capitalist system shuts out those who don't have enough money to own newspapers of their own, he says.
None of which has stopped Mr. Jensen from becoming a one-man op-ed factory. Since Sept. 11, his America-bashing commentary has been a fixture in such papers as the Austin American Statesman, the Houston Chronicle and Newsday of Long Island, N.Y. Typical was an Oct. 3 Newsday piece headlined "Let's Cool It With the Anti-Terrorist Talk."
The professor faults Bill Clinton for not wanting to dismantle the industrial-capitalist system. When I ask him to name one socialist, communist or Marxist revolution that ended in anything other than poverty and oppression, he can't--but naturally he blames American resistance for communism's failures. Oh, and the problem with America is that it can't get over thinking it is exceptional. America is nothing great, he says.
Still, Mr. Jensen's former students tell me he's a fair teacher. Anti-American talk dominates his lectures, but he doesn't insist on conformity. Students are free to argue any point of view--and often do in their papers--and still earn high marks.
