Accountability and hairsplitting

I believe the important part of the article (that is, the one which raises my warning flags) is the Executive's attempt on procedural grounds to avoid accounting for the funds earmarked for its pork procurement, conveniently labeled Vaterland Homeland Security - an appelation which we are already conditioned in a Pavlovian manner to salute rather than question.

Pork is pork - it ain't Kosher. However, that which is procured by Congresspersons for their respective constituencies comes as a result of political compromise and dealmaking in a public forum. The Executive should stand forthrightly to the same public accountability - and if public security is concerned, we must assert our right to know that the money is being spent appropriately and will have results that enhance our safety and way of life - not the pockets of contractors and bureaucrats.
