Does not imply official political suppression or making a particular political movement illegal. "Non-kid-glove treatment" would be similar to the vast public derision Le Pen is getting in France and throughout Europe, with people taking to the streets in protest, virulent media condemnation, and general verbal and written crap being rained on him from all sides.
This kind of condemnation and criticism does not happen to communists in these same nations, despite a historical record even worse than that of fascism (assuming Le Pen even qualifies as a real fascist.)
