Arafat has made an unprecedented statement in Arabic condemning the suicide bombings and calling for a cessation. The arrest of 16 Hamas members did not include any senior leaders of the group so it may well be just a show to pacify the U.S. They have done the arrest thing in the past and usually release them after a few days.

Gaza

Under the circumstances, if I were Sharon, I would hold off to see if the bombing stops. The risk is nominal for the positive props for restraint. Another bombing after Arafat's appeal would look very bad for the Pals.

The news guys are saying a Gaza raid will be the bloodiest action yet. Many casualties expected on both sides.
