Some thoughts

******************************************************
don't disagree at all.......... But Niether side should have that kind of destructive power....... do you think the technology... if not the weapons themselves............ won't eventually "leak" from India into hands inimical to your country and mine?
******************************************************

India's government has a much firmer grip on all elements of its military, compared to Pakistan. Although I wholehearted agree that the entire region would be a lot safer if both India and Pakistan (and China for that matter) were reducing their nukes, like the US and Russia are doing, the reality right now is that Indian nukes are a lot safer than Paki nukes.

Right now, you are focused on the "Muslim" threat
*****************************************

That's simple, because right now Islamic extremism is the greatest threat to the free, democratic, civilized nations of the world.

************************************************
A decade or so ago it would have been the " Communist threat"
************************************************

That's simple, because at that time communism was the greatest threat to the free, democratic, civilized nations of the world.

One or two decades from now? Who the hell knows.......
************************************************

That's simple, whatever form of totalitarianism, if any, exists as the greatest threat to the free, democratic, civilized nations of the world.

Point is.........

1... We may not be able to put the genie back in the bottle....

Many people in the free west wanted to... and tried... ( The Anti-nuclear movement) and were demonised as "Soviet Stooges" or " Appeasers" at the time. Too damn late now to ask if they were right.

I've looked up detailed plans of how to put a crude, A-Bomb together that could be fitted into an ordinary truck sized cargo container some years ago.... I reckon ( Given I can get enough weapons grade material together, and a team of people dedicated enough so that some of them will willing die in the construction of the bomb.) I don't need anything more sophisticated then a good precision lathe to do it.

2 .......Which leads me to several conclusions.............. Chief of which is that I should not make enemies unnesseccarily. I would want it known by all, that I have listened to both sides, have examined every side of the question and to the best of my ability... reached a fair and honest judgement...... Before I p*ss people off.

By the way... according to some casual research I've done... I can, useing utensils available in my kitchen.........and my credit card down the local " Hardware Store" make enough Mustard Gas to ruin New Yorks day.

One of the unforeseen side-effects of "Globalisation" ... the free transfer of knowledge, capital, technology, and people......is that we are all vulnerable now.

First, the technology and other means necessary to construct a nuclear bomb were inevitably to come within the access of more and more nations, regardless of 'globalization'. I don't think access to this technology could possibly have been kept in a bottle, like the genie, by anyone on this earth. The best way to fight the nuclear threat is to target governments, not technology. Strengthen governments that mean to contain and firmly control, and seek to reduce nukes under their control, and remove dangerous governments that can't or won't, or that even seek to produce and supply terrorist organizations.

Second, you're right that we shouldn't unneccesarily piss people off and create enemies. But the fact is that Islamic fundamentalists have declared war on the entire non-Muslim world, and made enemies of us, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! Regardless of any lack of tolerance any Western or non-Muslim nations have at times shown, it's very clear who the aggressor is in this world-wide conflict, it's the totalitarian philosophy of blind, backwards, and barbaric religious extremism, best exemplified by Al Queda.
