Current Events » in reply to Europe has a high population density, making mass transit more practical

Precisely! Most live without cars!

In europe mass transit is expected and arrives within minutes of wherever you are waiting (not a half hour or hour till the next infested bus comes along) so that no time is wasted.

Everywhere one goes there is street cars and where they are unable - light rail.

Most europeans live in apartments - with no garages. Cars are a burden on the streets and are likely to be stolen or dissected by immigrant-youth (yes..muslim youth). So parking on the street and having your car stolen is not an attractive prospect.

The cars present are mostly taxis - and the taxis can afford the gas - at the rates they charge!

To compare Japan's and Europe's fuel costs versus the US is preposterous. Out here in the desert - you travel miles to go to the market. You LIVE in your car for long distances. Gas prices here reflect that reality.

It's a totally different culture.
