Re: Oriana Fallaci

And I thought I was verbose...

The problem with pieces that are accumulations of criticism, so much so that it is hard to assimilate it all, is that it immediately lowers the writers vantage point.

While she has some valid points, they are presented in such a brusque and unsubtle manner as to defeat much of their value. The tone is a resounding righteousness that will often leave the reader unswayed.

It is for the same reason that Mark Twain's political satires on the Czar or the Belgian King were not well received. He was too full of bitterness to sweep the reader up in the humor.

The pen is mightier than the sword - but it has to be a very sharp pen that puts the prose onto paper.

Each paragraph must lead to the next - each thought should clear and when critical should try to escape the appearance of passing condemnation wholesale from an ivory tower of intellect.
