Well, Raoul, I suspect Jews in France may feel a bit like Muslims in America. They are outnumbered by quite a ways. However, the few Muslims here don't have any influence at all, really. Not counting the "celebrity" Muslims, such as Mohammed Ali, nee Cassius Clay.
Just some anecdotal and personal experience with American Jewish attitudes toward the current situation.
I live on the West Coast of the US, have been associated with the local Jewish Community Center, and not a member of any organized religion. Were I forced to join one, it would be Judaism.
I have friends who are Jewish and several other Jewish acquaitances close enough to have discussed this issue with. Over the years we have talked about Israel from time to time, not just in the present context. Every one of them, all of them, have volunteered that Israel has learned the worst from it's oppressors, and believe they have abused the Palestinians beyond tolerance. These people are proud of Judaism, not proud of Israel.
A couple of them gave to charities which funneled money to Israel, don't anymore.
As a matter of fact, the non-Jews I know are more likely to be pro-Israel in regard to the Palestinians, I think because they don't usually follow the situation closely. It's a soft support, usually characterized by "well, it's difficult for everyone". Those who have been interested in the situation are very pro-Israel, strongly disapproving of her treatment of the Palestinians.
I am sure the polls are correct. And they don't reflect the opinions of people I know, and I tend to have friends who are both pretty middle- and lower-middle class and some wealthy ones. I think the East Coast may have different attitudes.
And the Bush administration foreign policy doesn't reflect the attitudes of any of them very well, though about half are Republican.
That's my experience. It isn't worth much, worthless as scientific, doesn't seem to reflect the rest of the US. But, in my little world, there is very little support for Israeli policy re Palestinians, a lot of support for Israel.
