Just as an aside, the Israelis have tried the "root them out one by one" technique using soldiers on the ground. In Jenin, in particular. They lost many soldiers to snipers, bombers, and booby traps which infested the "civilian" area.
As I recall, they got absolutely no credit for doing this instead of standing off and lobbing missiles into the area.
In fact, they were raked over the coals even worse than they are now.
