My family plan for non-smart phones is unlimited for texting and data. When you go to a smart phone or IPhone (which I recently did)you must choose another data plan that used to be a flat $30 per month.
The 3G IPhone is now only $45 and they have a limited data plan that is only $15 per month. They say that you only use this data allowance when you are not on you home network or any wifi hotspot. Since I am the only one with a smart phone I think I can stay under the $15 limit.
