In 99, there was a huge dioxin scandal over here and I remember we were reduced to eating fish for a whole week, until verifications cleared the problem.
In France, earlier there was the tainted blood scandal.
All this has caused lots of problems to our farmers, as anybody can imagine.
Because food involved the well being of millions of inhabitants, any suspicion becomes major news. Food is a field were risk adversity is greatest.
The GM issue, I'm sure, has more to do with lack of knowledge than ideology. It's not antiscience but a recognition of its lack.
