I once had a Poly Sci professor who said just that about West Berlin.

He was convinced that West Berlin would eventually fall and that with it all of Germany would eventually go the way of the Eastern Block...It was only a matter of time...Support of West Berlin was a waste of money and eventually the money would dry up.

I had done a paper on the brilliance of the Kennedy Administration's management of the Second Berlin Crisis...He completely disagreed with the thesis of my paper: His argument was, "Kennedy should have let go of West Berlin..."

That was in 1988. Wow. Its been that long since I was in College.

P.S. I remember he read the NY Times everyday before class. As Yoda would say, "A real pointy head was he."
