Ed,
Your comment is appropriate. Our taxation base that services our national debt has grown with time because our economy continues to grow. However our economy would probably grow faster if so much money was not diverted to service old debt. Of course, the $64,000 question is whether our economic growth will continue to service the existing debt. The baby boomers will retire in the next 20 years and become a drain upon the economy. We maybe on the front end of a debt trap analogous to someone with a huge credit card debt and only able to pay the monthly minimum. If his debt continues to grow such that he can not pay the monthly minimum or he loses his job then bankruptcy quickly follows.
