It's true we have little religiously motivated murder in the US. We do, however, have a long history of discrimination based on race and religion. Some of it is still practiced, and some of it is very subtle.
If I were a member of a small group visible because of mode of dress or personal physical characteristics, I would feel unsafe in criticizing other members of my small group, because that would be my bedrock, the place, as Robert Frost said, "where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in". The big group is full of people who don't know, don't care about, don't understand, and don't want me.
The solution to this dilemma is to make the smaller group more a part of the larger group. Like, from the big group to the small one: "What are we going to do about this problem? You have the expertise in this matter. Please explain so all of us can understand."

When you state that Indonesia is a more dangerous place to speak out, you are referring, I think, to the level of civil violence in the country. (That 27% of the population lives below the poverty level might contribute to that, but that's another discussion.)
Yet I suggest that the chances of being harmed for speaking out against what is a frightening and embarrassing minority within the dominant religion is less because one is surrounded by more friends. The chances are not zero, but neither are they zero in the US: we've had political assassinations based on ideology in this country too.
It also is easier to speak out in one's own country against violence against one's own country. What does this say about the feeling of ownership that American Muslims have? Do they want violence against their country, or do they fear stoking the fires of hate that already smolder in the non-Muslim community?
