It's about time
The Feminist Majority began protesting the treatment of women by the Taliban as early as 1997, but they got nowhere with either Clinton or Bush.
I'm not sure whether it's because the Taliban were opposed to Russia as part of the mujahedin, or whether it's because the Saudis were their friends. Maybe both.
Afghan women just weren't officially important in the US until a bunch of fanatics trained in their country flew airplanes into buildings here.
