Re: 'First Line of Defense'

<We have met Big Brother and he is... us.

Rice urged Americans to remain vigilant, calling the public "the first line of defense" against attacks. "There have been many cases in which Americans who were alert to suspicious circumstances around them have been able to tip law enforcement officials," she said.

Um.... yeah - like that waitress in Georgia.

Exactly, and what she did was correct. Every single attack upon her responsible actions results in fewer people responding to a suspicious, potentially deadly event today. We’re not all trained in espionage, or detective work, but we are our nation’s eyes and ears, and each of us remains our brother’s keeper.

"(The president) does not begin his day on Iraq. He begins his day on the war on terrorism and the threat levels and the threat information that we have in the United States," Rice said. - and then proceeded to illustrate that "threat levels" = Iraq.

A paragraph stating the U.S. president’s first concerns of the workday are national is just that. A paragraph designed to make a point. From here, the story breaks to other paragraphs and other points. That paragraph was designed to stand alone, but you wish to drag it through the story.

Okay.

Sometimes these sound bites are more revealing than their originators intend.

And each carries his/her own interpretation of what anyone says or does.
