"Effective leader" covers a lot of territory

George Washington (lousy general, great leader)

Adolf Hitler (evil genius, great leader)

Oliver Cromwell (religious fanatic, great leader)

Abraham Lincoln (suspender of habeus corpus, great leader)

Alexander the Great (had a boyfriend, great leader)

Julius Caesar (megalomaniac, great leader)

Napoleon (see "Julius Caesar")

FDR (socialist pig, great leader) (I had to throw you guys a bone)

Attila the Hun (sacker of Classical Europe, great leader)

Richard Lionheart (absentee landlord, great leader)

JFK (womanizer, great leader)

There must be something wrong with Simon Bolivar, who was also a great leader, but I don't know enough about him to pinpoint it.

Great leadership is someone's ability to get people behind him, or her. Where the leadership leads people is immaterial to whether the person at the front is a great leader or not.

There is no doubt that Mr. Bush knows how to lead. Part of that is knowing when to get out of the way, which he does.

And:
Why do you think Europeans care what Bob Woodward has to say? Watergate hardly raised a blip on the radar over there while it was happening. It's ancient history now. I doubt even many Americans under the age of, say, 35 are aware of Woodward's career-making involvement. (Many of those over 35 get him confused with Robert Redford. ;) ) He's been trading on it ever since.

Mary Anne
