Rather than looking at abortion as eliminating poor people, which is a dreadful and inaccurate perspective, I believe it is terminating the development of an unwanted child. I have to admit that eliminating poverty sounds attractive.
A child needs the care of loving parents with the desire for that child and the emotional resources to provide for it. It needs love, care, and people who will put aside their own desires for the welfare of that child. When I child doesn't get love and respect it grows up miserable, a living, breeding cancer in society, without the wherewithal to raise children themselves. For every anecdote regarding a kid which grew up well in those conditions there are 100 or 200 who didn't.
Nope. Every kid deserves to be wanted. Unfortunately the process of reproduction assumes that from people who can't deliver.
No one "likes" abortion. However, no one wants others to tell them to raise an unwanted child which will not have it's needs met.
Let's shift the view a bit.
