Lee is focusing on race and ancestry, which is not the real problem.
The problem with unrestricted and illegal immigration is the dilution of American culture and its philosophical base, and has nothing to do with unimportant externalities like skin color. It is reasonable to place restrictions and rules on immigration, and strictly enforce them*. It is reasonable to make certain demands on immigrants, like a health check, or evidence that they have a means of support. Still, I support regulated immigration, unlike some other conservatives who want to shut the spigot off entirely.
I live in Northern California and have seen one hell of a lot of people from immigrant minority groups who are a lot more "American" than a lot of Mayflower European types I know. For one thing, most of them have a well-honed work ethic, which seems to be a declining trait in homegrown Americans. Such people are assets to America.
You, on the other hand, are making the mistake of assuming the Republicans are racist, while the Democratic Party is not.
Look at the national Democratic Party. Ignore what they say. Look at how they act, particularly toward their black constituency. What is their attitude toward blacks voters? Are they treated as equals? Or like property? Is the black vote "courted" or "sought?" Or is it "delivered?" Are black voters assumed to be productive and independent citizens? Or dependent and incapable, unable to deal with education, jobs, housing, or even voting without constant Federal assistance?

As I said, Lee missed the point. You're missing one too.
