You make your points thoughtfully, but the hard fact is that most universities are in reality dominated by a left-wing outlook. I'm not claiming this is the result of a "conspiracy." Just facts. I can dump the statistics on you if you like...I've posted most of them here before. Just one fact: a survey of Ivy League schools shows that about 3 percent of the professors consider themselves Republicans. Is this balance? Or diversity?
The constant pattern of hard-line leftists being treated with respect on campuses, while conservatives are hounded and harassed, is also self-evident.
Now it's possible you thought I was talking about students, in which case there may be more balance. But how many of the conservative PhDs you mentioned ended up with a teaching position at a college?
And please, don't make the capital mistake of confusing academic standing with actual education, intelligence, or especially common sense. A lot of the professors I knew may have had several degrees, and considered themselves quite smart, but weren't competent to run a hot dog stand.
