Good point on Von Braun
When I posted a response below showing that the "Left/Right" thing is a bit fuzzy in regards to the history of the space program, I forgot to mention how much of Russia's and America's space program grew out of Nazi weapons research. Had Von Braun and the Nazis never existed, sooner or later someone like Goddard would have gotten someone's attention. But how much later?
