Dictators

<No change of subject necessary: Pinochet, Marcos, Baby Doc, the Shah of Iran (off the top of my head) were removed from power without anyone having to invade anyone. I'll bet that without breaking a sweat I could come up with 20 more examples from the 20th century. I wouldn't be surprised if the total number was closer to 100.

You maintain that force is necessary. Prove that, please. (do I hear a subject change coming up?)

I was talking about Saddam, and maybe North Korea.

And of course force is almost always necessary, although not always generated by an outside influence.

Pinochet held elections, lost, and stepped down. How often does THAT happen with a totalitarian system? The only other remarkable case of this happening that comes to mind was the communist regime in Nicaragua.

Marco was ousted by an internal uprising, as were the Shah and Baby Doc. Neither Saddam nor North Korea look vulnerable to internal unrest, or a sudden election loss. Iran, fortunately, seems to be a different story.

Stalin, Tito, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Khomeini, and a number of others just died, and usually left a totalitarian system behind anyway. No real changes, usually.

Overthrown by external force, although often NOT the United States:

Adolf Hitler
Mussolini
Idi Amin
Pol Pot
Milosevec

I can't come up with too many more than this...I don't think there HAVE been a hundred dictators in the 20th century, unless you start counting up various warlords and sheiks.
