Why do countries oppose war?

When a country starts a war, we know when it begins but not when it will end.

A war has practically always a territorial reasons; one side claims a land which has been occupied by another.

Is Saddam claiming territory in the US? After all, Iraq has lots and lots ans lots of room, hot weather and above all is full of oil! Why conquer the US?
That's why countries opposing the war can't see any threat to the US coming from Iraq, a coutry of 18 million inhabitants, extremely poor, versus a country of 265 Million inhabitants (I don't remember exactly) with the most powerful army in the world, by very far.

War to bring democracy in Iraq...Ah, but what's going on in Afghanistan? Is it becoming democratic? And can we force democracy in a country that doesn't know it? Wouldn't enforcing democracy precisely be an infrigement to their sense of freedom? They don't have the same freedom we do; they have some and most of the time (unless you belong to another culture or religion than those recognized by the authorities) they feel allright in their country, as much as we feel allright in ours.

Pre-emptively start a war, unprovoked? Well, it will lead to all kinds of interpretations all over the world: If the most powerful democracy can start a war, I'll do the same, will think a dictator. After all, my neighbour has this land that should be ours, by right, etc...
Very dangerous and no example at all to the world, a pre-emptive war.

And also, no connection between 9/11 and Iraq, so why blame Iraq for terrorist attacks?

Is Iraq only country number two , after 9/11? And other dictatorships will follow? (Those most anti-american, of course coming first because if you're not for us, you're against us).

An irony: Napoleon and later on, Hitler, wanted to build a large strong unified Europe...By force.

The European Union is slowly achieving the same goal, by a larger margin, all this peacefully.
