If Saddam has thanked the protesters, what else does this tell you?

This is a man who has no use for free speech, and probably has no emotional understanding of its importance or value.

This is also a man who has made a political career of dividing and conquering his enemies. Iraq has no common forum for political discussion because Saddam has made it impossible for the varied groups in his nation to overcome their differences and make common cause in the areas where they agree. He exploits fear, fosters ignorance in fear's service, and divides his opponents this way. He rose to power and maintains it not only by brutality, but by guile and manipulation. He's very good at it.

It's only natural that he would seek to turn Americans, famous for our internal variety and fractiousness, against each other. If we fight ourselves, we'll have that much less attention to use fighting him.

Better by far to recognize dissent as the valuable self-evaluation tool that it is, as it fosters the national discussion and moves us towards some sort of concensus. Better to respect those who honestly disagree and have the courage to speak up. Better not to let Saddam define who our people are for us.

Criminal activities are another matter. A vandal with good intentions is a vandal nevertheless. Try him justly and openly. If convicted, confine him humanely. History will write the rest.
