My grandfather came over and fought in the trenches of Europe in WWI. He literally fought against his father’s land, after all, his father was born in Germany. But my grandfather was born in America and he was a solder for the US Army. He fought against his German relatives who still lived in Germany and were solders for that army. He came home, but many Americans didn’t. Many Americans died helping Europe in WWI.
In WWII, my grandfather had a family to raise. He didn’t go to Europe, but he faces some prejudice against Germans in America. Still he was proud to be an America and angry at the Nazis that plaque his father’s land. Had he been young and unmarried, I am sure he would have gone back to Europe to fight.
A lot of Americans never came back from Europe in that war either.
A lot of American blood has been spilt on Europe’s soil.
We would do it again too.
