Re: More of the same

I read it over twice. Still not sure what he's trying to get at. Oddly, he seems to be terrified that we will succeed with few casualties. The Left is going into the mental equivalent of cardiac fibrillation. There is no consistency of position with earlier crises. They don't know what's going on. They don't know what they want. They don't know what to do about Saddam, North Korea, or anything else. And most of them couldn't care less about Iraq. All they know is that they are against George W. Bush. No matter what he does.

So, on that solid rock they stand: Total and absolute hatred of Bush and the Republicans. I hope they find some comfort in it. They certainly won't find anything else useful.

I have seen dozens of interviews now with protestors. Almost to the last one they break down into near-incoherence when asked to actually think about the situation and what they are doing. I don't think these people could marshall a linear train of logical thought if their lives depended on it.

Their thinking--and I use the term loosely--seems to run along these lines:

--Saddam has no weapons of mass destruction. If we invade, he will attack us with weapons of mass destruction.

--We can't risk civilian casualties to free Iraq from a man who has killed a million of his own people, and shows no signs of quitting.

--We are acting unilaterally, although only about three nations in Europe are not aligned with us.

--Terrible political upheaval in the Mideast will result from removing Saddam, yet leaving him and his sons there to rule for decades, tyrants who have invaded their neighboring nations in the past, will not result in political upheaval in the Mideast.

And most ironic of all, there seems to be a constant fear that Bush and the Republicans will somehow work this all up into the type of totalitarian control that has been, for the past century, almost exclusively the product of regimes, nations, leaders and philosophies that are worshipped and promoted by the Left.

--All the protestors think Saddam should disarm, but don't think he should be forced to. None of the protestors like his regime, but believe he should remain in power.
