I recently saw an interview with a retired soldier that was involved with interrogation. He was adament that no captive in custody of the US will be subjected to torture by us or any proxy. He was downright pissed at the mere suggestion. We don't do it and we don't need to do it says he.
He did concede that sleep deprivation is possible. Under the laws on this kind of thing, a captive is entitled to 6 hours of sleep each 24 hour period but the 6 hours does not have to be consecutive.
According to him, the tactics used are more effective than drugs or physical pain. Isolation, lack of stimuli, long periods of darkness followed by long periods of no darkness, etc, etc. This brings about a feeling of hopelessness.
This is not torture because it is all within legal limits and they all talk eventually.
