Those desperate for regime change but unwilling to gamble on war feel the dilemma most keenly. The uncomfortable question they constantly grapple is how can one be possible without the other?
In "Atlas Shrugged," an exchange was repeated to the point where it almost became a running gag. When frustrated industrialists wondered how they could accomplish the obviously impossible demands of the statists, the reply was always "Somehow!"
How do you stop Saddam without military force? "Somehow!"
I should start a collection of articles, comments, and columns with some variation of the idea that war is not the best way to do this, compared to the (always unspecified) alternatives.
