It was an Iranian Shiite populace (not the corrupt theocracy) that deposed the American-supported Shah and overran our embasy in Tehran and held American diplomats hostage.
In the eyes of many in the Arab world, an American-supported president of Iraq would be held in contempt and sufficient motivation for violent action against those who put he or she in power.
It is utterly naive to think that once the war is won, that peace, harmony and democracy will blossom unblemished among a population of 22 million people, many of whom are driven by irreconcilable religious fervor.
