Re: If...

"Well, wasn't eliminating Saddam on Bush's agenda before 9/11 ?"

Nope, Bush was far more interested in domestic issues- that was Clinton's idea.

"The ROW saw in an invented connection between OBL and Saddam merely a pretext for war."
There is good reason to suspect a increasing relationship between Saddam and OBL.

"Then WMD's became the argument, taking the UN into the action."

Yes and no. WMD were the reason we were involved with Iraq and was legal reason to attack. Went to UN because British wanting to go through UN. If we didn't go through UN we might have done this whole thing differently

But the ROW saw again in the WMD another pretext.

Why is breaking a cease fire agreement considered a pretext?

"If it turns out to have been the case all along, then it wholy justifies what the Old Europe has said about attacking Iraq."

Nope. Saddam refused to cooperate with inspectors. No one doubts this.

"The UN inspectors should be allowed back, just to be objective about the search, otherwise the ROW could very well believe the US army might be tempted to put WMD's somewhere, find them and pretend it is the smoking gun."

I think the inspector should go back in (you can bet the Coalition isn't stopping them) but to think US Army would be tempted to plant WMD would be quite silly. First we don't have WMD- unless you mean advanced nuclear weapons that Saddam couldn't have. Next our Army would rather kill our President then do something like this- though maybe the CIA would do this. And it's hard to fake these things- they are going to be investigated by non military people not just in the US but all over the world.

"If it turns out that indeed no WMD's were left in Iraq, I just hope the population of the US will realize what its president has done."

It doesn't really matter- Saddam refused to fully cooperate. If Saddam had cooperated in the beginning by about '94 the inspectors would have left Iraq. We wouldn't have imposed sanctions, we wouldn't have had any reason to maintain No Fly zones. And Saddam would have actually been a serious threat just about now. Of course, we could have then pressed the debt to Kuwait if he had refused to pay any of this.
