Energy may not be the issue, but chemistry.
Petroleum products have many useful applications besides as fuel. To be able to manufacture petroleum from refuse would provide a stable, renewable source for those products.
It would also make a dent in the cosmic trash heap. Landfills could become valuable property, if this works.
