The way I took the pun was that that word has french roots, so the pun was employing a french word to describe the whole anti-french mania. I would hope thats what Lindy was doing...
I have nothing against the meaning for THAT word, or even employing that word. (not the epithet, but the word for petty and cheap). I would agree, though, it is not particularly wise to involve that word in any public pun or play-on-words in the modern political climate.
